Enable better cleaning and sustainable consumption with SCCONNECT

Monitor equipment use and measure water consumption

The current focus on sustainable consumption and preservation of natural resources is leading many food and beverage processors to adjust various processes to minimize their environmental impact.

Given the industry's water-intensive production and cleaning, any reduction in consumption can significantly positively impact local water reserves, supporting the current focus on sustainability.

In terms of the cleaning process, how can you find the right balance between the need for a high level of hygiene and minimal water consumption? Add to the equation that you want to maintain a profitable business.

Because, let’s face it, the operational costs of food or beverage production will always be pivotal in the total scheme of things.

Get insights with SCCONNECT

With our monitoring system SCCONNECT, we offer insights into staff behaviour, enabling you to manage and refine the cleaning process as needed.

Enhancing staff performance boosts the hygiene and food safety of your processing facilities and final products and optimises water, chemical, and energy consumption.

Distribution of cleaning costs - pie chart

The cost of cleaning

Looking at the total cleaning costs, labour accounts for approximately 75%.* This number varies depending on labour market conditions but indicates the cost distribution well. The cost of water comes second with 12%. Energy and chemicals both constitute 7% of the total costs.

It is evident that the behaviour of the cleaning staff during the often-limited time allocated for cleaning directly influences hygiene standards. Their behaviour similarly impacts the consumption of water, energy and chemicals. So, optimising the behaviour of the cleaning staff will also optimise resource consumption.

*Data collected in field study at a food processing factory in Denmark. The labour cost percentage will differ across countries depending on the wage level. However, labour still accounts for over 50% of the total, even in low-wage countries.

We show you HOW your cleaning equipment is used

Other systems measure the resource consumption through expensive installations.

With SCCONNECT, you get insights on how the equipment is used. When the water flows and when it doesn't. Using this data, you can optimize resource consumption and get better hygiene.

At a much lower cost.

The collected data also enables water, chemical, and energy consumption estimates applicable to your sustainability reporting.

Direct measurement of the water consumption at one or more central locations is also an add-on option for SCCONNECT.

What are the benefits of SCCONNECT?

Visualisation of time spent on each cleaning step offers multiple opportunities:

  • Identify deviations from the planned process, such as:
    • Late start or early stop
    • Missed cleaning steps
  • Duration variations – can indicate poor hygiene or excessive resource consumption
  • Monitor progress in optimisation projects
  • Identify training opportunities for cleaning staff
  • Support documentation of HACCP/GMP

The SCCONNECT Dashboard

The entire cleaning process is visualised on the dashboard:

  • A list of each cleaning unit connected to the system
  • Select one and see a breakdown of the cleaning process with colour-coded functions for an easy overview
  • Creating a cleaning plan enables comparison between the planned and the actual process
  • Entering resource costs enables comparison between the planned and the actual cost of resource consumption

Water, chemical, and energy consumption estimates are based on the rinse nozzle’s flow rate and chemical concentration.

System configuration, data storage and costs

The SCCONNECT monitoring system can be configured with the S4CONNECT satellite and MSCONNECT main station. Retrofits to the standard S4 satellite and main station MS5/7 are available upon request.

It is connected to a mobile network, avoiding potential conflict with, e.g., company firewalls. The system does not collect any personal data and is, therefore, GDPR compliant.

Data is encrypted and sent to a highly secure, cloud-based Microsoft Azure server, which processes and presents the data in the SCCONNECT dashboard.

At present, the system is available for installation in EU/EEA.

The SCCONNECT system includes:

  • Equipment/hardware
  • Subscription to cloud service and SCCONNECT dashboard

Direct water measurement – your opportunity to detect deviances

With this add-on option, you can compare the actual consumption with the estimates from SCCONNECT and detect any deviances or validate existing procedures.

A degree of deviation can be expected due to, for example, pressure loss in the pipes. However, significant discrepancies indicate incorrect operation or faulty equipment in the system.

The dashboard allows you to identify these discrepancies between the planned cleaning procedures and the staff's actual actions.

Additionally, contractual obligations on water consumption are easily monitored with this add-on.
